An exhibition based magazine dedicated to global diasporic stories.
Pronounced soul-mender, the name Sal:mender references the salamander and its mythological meaning. Thought to live in fire, the legendary creature was believed to be fireproof leading to the Latin motto: “Nutrisco et extinguo” / “I nourish and extinguish.”
Inspired by this myth, Sal:mender is a platform that mends the soul through creativity feeding from the good fire, and extinguishing the bad.
We are a creative space for artists and audiences to connect through shared stories.
We founded Sal:mender to rethink how exhibitions work making them more intimate, more accessible, and built around the active participation of the audience. This is a space for children of the global diaspora to see themselves, speak to one another, and reflect together.
Our mission is to tell global diasporic stories and preserve personal and collective memory. Through art, we explore how culture helps us make sense of ourselves and our everyday lives.
Each issue of Sal:mender is an exhibition guided by a research question. Through these, we aim to gather a multicultural community of creatives, and spark meaningful conversations between artworks, artists, and audience.
